With the holiday season fast approaching, you’re probably enjoying getting your home decorated and ready for the festivities. But, as much fun as it is to decorate, we all know that taking all of those decorations down is way less fun. And, finding effective and space-saving ways to store them? Well, that’s even more challenging.
Unfortunately, the time to take down the trimmings will be here before you know it. So, here are five holiday decoration storage hacks to make the process at least a little bit easier. Now, if only you could do something about that after-holiday sadness that comes around every year.
1. Ornament Storage
Everybody knows that ornaments can be tricky to store—particularly if they’re fragile. Plus, those containers specifically made for storing ornaments can be ridiculously expensive.
So, make use of one of those standard large plastic bins with a lid. Then, layer plastic cups inside, placing a piece of cardboard between each layer. The plastic cups act as the dividers between ornaments—for way less than those specialized ornament boxes! If your ornaments are small enough, you can also use an empty egg carton to keep them safe and organized.
2. Preserve Wrapping Paper
It’s frustrating when your rolls of wrapping paper keep unwinding when you try to store them. But, you don’t want to rubber band them, as you’re worried you’ll rip or crease the paper.
Slice an empty cardboard toilet paper roll, and then place that around the center of your roll of wrapping paper. Then, rubber band the wrapping paper on top of the cardboard. Voila! Your wrapping paper is kept neatly in place, without any creasing or folding! You can also stand your wrapping paper rolls in an empty garbage can or hang them in a garment bag to keep them safe, organized, and out of the way.
3. Untangle Lights
Is there anything more frustrating than having to deal with a tangled mess of holiday lights? Well, you can save yourself that headache by putting your lights away correctly this year.
How? Simply wrap your strands of lights around pieces of cardboard, so that you just need to unwrap them the following year. If you’re looking for something a little different, wrapping them around a clothes hanger works well too!
4. Protect Your Wreath
Specialized holiday storage solutions often come with a hefty price tag. So, skip the cost of those fancy, zippered wreath bags and get creative instead! A large garbage bag and a clothes hanger will accomplish the same thing. Your holiday wreath will keep it’s shape and stay dust free—for little to no cost!
5. Organize Beaded Garland
Similar to holiday lights, dealing with a tangled mess of beaded garland can be incredibly aggravating. So, when you’re packing away your decorations this year, thread your beaded garland into an empty water bottle. Next year, you can just grab the end of the garland from the top of the water bottle, and hang it up without any hassle!
We all know that packing away holiday decorations isn’t nearly as fun as putting them up. But, there are a few things you can do to make the process a little easier! Use a few of these hacks to take some stress out of the cleanup—you can thank me next year.
