If you were to make a list of the most beautiful places to spend your college years, UCSD would have to be ranked high on the list. Set in stunning La Jolla, California, the University of California – San Diego offers its nearly 30,000 students an array of research and study opportunities, including the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The Tritons compete in NCAA Division II, and have won 24 national championships in sports ranging from soccer to volleyball to water polo.
And, of course, La Jolla is a dream come true. The sprawling suburban area of San Diego has seven miles of stunning Pacific coastline, and all that goes along with that. The La Jolla Cove is a great place to take brothers and sisters on family weekend, and everyone loves the Birch Aquarium. Golfers will love Torrey Pines, and as I can tell you from personal experience, La Jolla is a great place to scuba dive! Plus, being part of San Diego means being close to the Chargers, Padres and the beautiful Gaslamp District bar and restaurant area.
All of this beauty comes at a steep price, though many argue that it’s worth every nickel. The cost of living in La Jolla is over 85% higher than the national average, and the cost of an apartment starts near $1000 per month. That’s not to say that a smart shopper can’t find something for less than $900, but you should be willing to go a little higher. Renters, look on the bright side… the average home cost is over $1.8 million, so at least you’re not buying!
Once you find your little slice of UCSD paradise, there’s always a chance that you’ll find yourself looking to leave the perfect climate and gorgeous scenery (hey, it could happen!), or find that you want to store a few of your belongings someplace a little less pricey, there are plenty of good self storage units open near UCSD. You can find a 4 X 8 locker for only $30 per month, and many units available in and near San Diego.
