The University of California, Davis (also known as UCD, UC Davis, or Davis) is a public teaching and research university established in 1905 and located in Davis, California. The US News and World Report ranked Davis as the 8th best public institution in the nation. UC Davis was both the 2nd campus of the University of California system, and is the second largest campus in California, at a sprawling 7,309 acres. It also has the 3rd largest enrollment in the University of California system, following UCLA and UC Berkeley.
A highlight of UC Davis is its student-run free-form radio station. Its operations began in a unique location: the laundry room in the all-male of Beckett Hall dormitory, on February 1, 1964. The station gained its reputation by airing interviews with Angela Davis and having a live call-in show with then California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1969.
UC Davis has some 400 registered student organizations, ranging from political clubs to professional societies to language clubs. Student clubs are managed through the Student Programs and Activities Center.
On game days, students are encouraged to wear Aggie Blues to show their Aggie Pride. If they are spotted wearing Aggie Blue by the Aggie Pack, UC Davis paraphernalia may be thrown to them as a reward. The students are referred to as Aggies because of the schools’ agricultural background. However, the official school mascot is a mustang named Gunrock. There was a movement to change the mascot from a mustang to a cow but it was turned down by alumni. One less-known student tradition occurs during the commencement ceremonies, where students toss tortillas into the air at the beginning of the ceremony.
The city of Davis is a friendly college town that cares about sustainability and welcoming newcomers. Ranked as one of the best towns to live in the nation, Davis is also considered the most bike-friendly city in the nation.
The UC Davis Aggies athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division 1, primarily in the Big West Conference, but also in the Big Sky Conference and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
With a wide range of opportunities both in the city and elsewhere, or if you find youself needing to move, students often find themselves looking for affordable and convenient self storage. There are plenty of self storage units available close to UC Davis. Students can find cheap gated self storage facilities that offer 24 hour access and provide direct drive-up to the storage unit near 95616.
