Located in Columbia, Missouri, or CoMo as I like to call it, The University of Missouri (Mizzou) is the largest university in Missouri, with close to 35,000 students. Established in 1839, Mizzou was the first public institution for higher education west of the Mississippi River. A fire burned down Academic Hall in 1892 leaving only the 6 columns that today stand as the center of Francis Quadrangle. Campus is divided into two groups of buildings; red campus and white campus. Red campus is centered around the historic Francis Quadrangle and is comprised of, shockingly, red brick. On a nice day you will find students laying in the rich green grassy area studying or simply tossing a frisbee for some stress relief. As the campus expanded, white campus was built out of Missouri limestone and is centered around Memorial Union. Mizzou is most well known for their School of Journalism or J-School, which was the first of its kind to be established in the world. In the entertainment world, Mizzou has been attended by actors Brad Pitt and Jon Hamm, and singer Sheryl Crow.
Mizzou is your typical “college town” with the campus sitting between many of the Greek life residences. It claims to have the oldest homecoming tradition, dating to 1911 with the Mizzou v. Kansas football game, thus establishing a long standing rivalry between the two schools. This historic rivalry was unfortunately ended in 2012 when Mizzou ended their affiliation with the Big 12 Conference to enter the highly competitive SEC. Mizzou has many strong athletic programs centered around football and basketball but I guess you could say they tend to be “always the bridesmaid and never the bride”! The basketball team has 22 NCAA Tournament appearances but has never reached the Final Four. After Mizzou’s football team beat arch rival Kansas on November 24, 2007 they were ranked #1 in the country for only the second time in school history. They proceeded to lose the Big 12 Championship Game to Oklahoma which put them out of the running for a BCS Championship.
Just steps outside of Francis Quadrangle is historic Downtown Columbia comprised of one square mile of restaurants, boutiques and local businesses. You won’t want to visit Columbia without eating at Shakespeare’s Pizza or going to experience a rock/pop concert at The Blue Note. These are just a couple of the hot spots outside of the many campus experiences.
Mizzou is one of only six public universities in the United States that has schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture, and law all on one campus so there are many internship and study abroad opportunities that may require you to find a self storage unit near Mizzou. Currently a large 10’x10′ unit will cost about $100/month. We hope to offer additional storage options for storage facilities close to 65203 in the near future.
