Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina. It is located in Wake County, and a small portion of it extends into Durham County. Raleigh is named after the person who founded the Roanoke Colony on the Roanoke Island in the Dare County of North Carolina, Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Oak City
Raleigh is nicknamed as the “City of Oaks” because several impressive oak specimens line the city streets. Raleigh is an important city culturally and historically. Some of the best museums in the state are located in Raleigh, at Downtown Raleigh, near the State Capitol; namely the North Carolina Museum of History, the North Carolina Museum of Art and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts is the home of the North Carolina Symphony and is located in Downtown Raleigh. In Southern Raleigh, a large amphitheater called the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion is located.

Raleigh is also an important educational center, with several colleges and schools operating in the city limits. Two historic Universities are located in the city: the Northern Carolina State University and the Shaw University, which was the first black University in the southern U.S. In 2011, Raleigh was ranked as third amongst the most educated cities in the country by NC, on the basis of the percentage of the population holding college degrees.

Raleigh is an important business center. Some of the companies operating here are Carquest, Martin Marietta Materials, Capitol Broadcasting Company, BB & T Insurance Services, and Red Hat.

Because Raleigh is a large, thriving city with a sizable student population, its residents regularly need temporary storage space.
