Collections

When you think of collectors, you likely imagine people who keep coins, stamps, or even rocks. But, believe me when I tell you that there are collectors out there for almost everything—no matter how strange or useless you think those items are. And, in some cases, the more unusual the item, the better!

Don’t believe me? Well, prepare to be amazed. I’ve rounded up this list of seven weird things that people actually collect for a hobby!

What is a collection?

First things first, it’s important to understand what exactly qualifies as a “collection”. A collection is just a group of objects accumulated in one location. Additionally, collectors often get a great sense of pride and joy in showcasing and taking care of their items.

So, with that in mind, here are some strange things that people collect.

1. Antique Medical Equipment

This definitely isn’t the ideal collection for anyone who has a fear of the doctor. But, some people—particularly those with an interest in the medical field—enjoy collecting antique medical equipment and cased surgical sets.

2. Lottery Tickets and Scratch Cards

I suppose you could think of this kind of like baseball cards. Some collectors enjoy building up a stockpile of lottery tickets or scratch cards. The worst part? They often don’t even scratch the cards in order to maintain their condition. So, they could be sitting on a literal fortune!

3. Street Signs and Streetlights

Sure, I’ve seen the occasional street sign hanging in someone’s basement or garage. But, I’ve never encountered an entire collection of these indicators. However, there are street sign collectors out there in the world! Although, it does seem like a strange thing to collect—particularly since street signs don’t really change much year to year.

4. Bars of Soap

Bars of soap don’t necessarily strike me as a collectible item. But, alas, different strokes for different folks—or, I suppose, different soaps for different folks! In fact, a woman in the UK has amassed a collection of over 5,000 bars of soap. She’s been collecting since 1991.

5. Empty Cans

You probably just toss your can in the recycling when you’re finished, and don’t even think anything of it. However, there are people out there that would absolutely treasure that empty can. Beer, coke, or iced tea—there’s a collector out there for all of them!

6. Sugar Packets

I love sugar, but not enough to collect it. However, some collectors think these items are pretty sweet. Known as sucrologists, these people enjoy collecting packets of sugar as well as sugar cube wrappers.

7. Burnt Food

Whenever I accidentally burn a piece of toast or a frozen pizza, I immediately toss it. However, burnt food collectors would never discard such a treasure! In fact, there’s even an entire Burnt Food Museum in Arlington, MA. See? There’s something out there for everyone!

We know there are tons of other strange items that people love to collect. So, what have you heard of? Do you collect anything that others would consider weird?
