If you weren’t already aware, many places offer great discounts for active duty military members and veterans. Ranging from home improvement stores like Lowe’s and The Home Depot, to retailers like Foot Locker and Barnes & Noble, there are plenty of businesses that choose to honor our military by offering them products and services at a discounted price.
Yes, these discounts are a great thing — if you know how to effectively take advantage of them. So, I’ve rounded up a few tips to help you ensure you’re making the most of your military discount!
1. Know the policy.
First things first, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the business policy regarding military discounts. Do they only offer the discount on certain days of the week or on holidays? Does the discount apply to sale merchandise, or only regularly priced products? Can only active duty members get the savings? Or, is it available for veterans as well?
Some business make their military discount super easy to find, while others might bury it in the fine print. But, do your research to make sure you know what to expect when shopping!
2. Bring your ID.
Discounts vary from place to place, but one thing usually remains the same: they require you to have a valid military ID. Perhaps they won’t always ask to see it, but it’s important to have it on hand anyway.
While you likely have your ID on you most times anyway, it’s important to bring it along on any shopping trips when you’re hoping to take advantage of a discount. That way, you’re sure to have it if you need it!
3. Pay attention when online shopping.
Many retailers also offer their military discount to online shoppers, adding extra convenience for you! However, make sure to pay extra careful attention when shopping online.
If your current shipping address is an APO or FPO, there are still many retailers who don’t ship to military addresses. So, you might need to enter the address of a friend or family member. Also, you’ll need to prove your military status in order to apply the discount online. But, scanning your military ID or other supporting documentation can make you vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves. You’re always better to call the customer service department directly to take care of verification!
4. Never hesitate to ask questions.
When in doubt, never be afraid to ask. Whether you need details of a particular business’ policy, or you need help in verifying your military status, know that you can always ask someone at the customer service counter in the store or reach out to their customer support center over phone. They’ll be happy to help you with any questions or concerns you might have.
Your military discount is a great benefit, so you want to make sure you’re making the most of it! Keep these tips in mind to ensure that you get the most bang for your buck when it comes to your military discount.
