Heading off to college is an exciting time, but it can also be a bit stressful. How do you make sure that you’ve packed up everything you need? Remembering big items such as sheets, dorm room decor and clothing is easy. But, there are a few obscure things you might encounter a need for in your new home away from home. So, whether you’re a parent preparing to transition your new college student into dorm life, or you’re an upcoming college freshman yourself, you don’t want to forget to pack these items along with your other college necessities!
1. Dishwashing Soap
If you’re moving into the dorms, you likely have a meal plan that will allow you to fill up your belly three times per day. But, what about those dorm room snacks you want to enjoy after a late night of studying? If you’re planning on bringing any bowls for popcorn or plates for those convenient peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, don’t forget to bring soap in order to wash your dorm dishes.
2. First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, and college campuses can also be a breeding ground for all sorts of colds and other illnesses. So, you want to make sure you have a few first aid necessities on hand. Pack up a kit to keep in your dorm room so that you’re prepared in case of emergency. Remember to include items such as Band-Aids, Neosporin, Aspirin, cold medicine, cough drops and an Ace bandage.
An umbrella is probably one of the last things to pop into your mind when thinking through your college packing list. But, if you neglect to bring one, you’ll surely regret it. Throw a small, compact umbrella in with your other college items so that you’re all set in case of a rainy day. It may seem like a waste of space, but you’ll be glad you brought it on your first drizzly walk to class!
4. Cleaning Supplies
You may have thought that you were escaping all household chores by going away to college. But, unfortunately, many dorm complexes will do regular inspections of your room. Plus, you don’t want to live the whole year in a dirty space anyway. Pack a few basic cleaning essentials, such as antibacterial spray, paper towel, a duster and some air deodorizer spray, so that you’re ready to freshen up your room when necessary. Don’t worry about bigger items like a mop or vacuum. Your dorm complex should have those for you.
At some point in the school year, your dorm may lose power. Whether it’s a bad thunderstorm or a blown fuse, you want to be prepared to navigate your room in the dark. Keep a flashlight in your desk or nightstand drawer, so that it’s within reach and easy to find. You may never need it. But, it’s small to pack and a great item to have just in case.
Packing up your entire life for college can definitely seem like a daunting task. Some items, such as posters, sheets and photos of your friends and family are fun to pack. However, you don’t want to forget to toss these important (and commonly forgotten!) items in the car with your other college essentials.
