Iowa State University (ISU) is a public land-grant and space-grant research university and is located in Ames Iowa. It is also known as Iowa State Univerisity of Science and Technology. Founded in 1858, Iowa State University has many of its schools that it is known for. Some of these are its agriculture and engineering schools as well as creating the first veterinary medicine school. Iowa State University has been a leader in technology and a birth place of the first electronic digital computer which started the boom in computer technology. Professor John Atanasoff and engineering graduate, Clifford Berry are the inventors of this new technology. ISU is the only university nationwide that has a U.S. Department of Energy research laboratory physically located on its campus. Iowa State played a large role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. The process to produce large quantities of high-purity uranium metal became known as the Ames process. Today, the Ames Laboratory focuses on more peaceful applications of materials research, usually related to increasing energy efficiency. One of its great alumni was George Washington Carver who helped farmers with ideas that changed farming.
The sports teams are known as the Cyclones and are a member of the Big 12 Conference and compete in the NCAA Division I. They acquired this name in 1895. Iowa suffered an unusually high number of devstating cyclones that year and that was how they got their name. (That was what tornadoes were called at that time.)
The largest employer in Ames is the University but also includes the 3M Manufacturing Plant, Mary Greely Medical Center, McFarland Clinic and Hy-Vee. Some of the favorite student hangouts in Ames are Chasers, Corner Pocket and DG’s Tap House.
With a wide range of opportunities both in the city and elsewhere, students often find themselves looking for affordable and convenient self storage. There are plenty of self storage units available in the area near Iowa State University. Students can find gated self storage facilities near 50011. A typical dorm room’s contents should fit nicely into a 5’X5′ storage unit. Another possibility is to rent a bigger sized unit and share the space and cost with a friend.
