Texas A&M University (A&M or TAMU) is a coeducational public research university located in College Station, Texas. It is the 7th largest university in the United States and the largest in Texas. It opened in 1876. The main campus is huge and includes the George Bush Presidential Library. A&M is the flagship institution of the Texas A&M University system. Texas A&M is one of six United States Senior Military Colleges and has made notable contributions to such fields as animal cloning and petroleum engineering. They are ranked in the top 20 American research institutes in terms of funding.
A&M students have built a large bonfire almost every year since 1909 to celbrate their desire to beat the University of Texas. The Aggie Bonfire is traditionally lit around Thanksgiving to coincide with the festivities surrounding the annual college football game between the schools. The Aggies are a member of the Southeastern Conference in all sports. All of the school’s 20 sports teams are known as the Aggies, their school colors are maroon and white and their school mascot is Reveille.
Some notable alumni who have attended Texas A&M are Rick Perry, the current Governor of Texas and a US Presidential candidate in 2012; Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense in the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations and he is also a past president of the University; a famous coach, Paul Bryant and Lyle Lovett, a popular country singer.
Only 100 miles from Houston and Austin and 160 miles from Dallas and San Antonio, College Station is in the heart of central Texas. It is within four hours driving time of most major cities. Having a network of well-maintained highways and a nearby regional airport serviced by major airlines makes transportation quick between College Station and the rest of the country.
Texas A&M University is one of the biggest employers in the area. Some of the other major employers are Bryan I.S.D., Sanderson Farms, Inc., St. Joseph regional health center and Reynolds and Reynolds.
