The University of Massachusetts (UMass) is a five campus public school system and the flagship is located in Amherst. It was founded in 1863. It also has campuses in Dartmouth, Boston, Lowell and Worcester. The entire system is ranked very high in the nation.
Noted alumni include several Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award winners. Some of them are Bill Cosby, Jeff Reardon, Mike Flanagan, Ben Cherington, Frank Black, Julius Erving and Richard Gere.
The housing system at UMass Amherst is one of the largest in the United States. Over 12,000 students live in 45 residence halls. Each residential area houses classrooms, recreational and social center, and kitchenettes.
UMass athletic teams are known as the Minuteman, based on the historical “minuteman” relationship with Massachusetts; women’s teams and athletes are known as Minutewomen.
The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA), provides public transportation in the area and runs well into the early morning hours on weekends when school is is session. Passenger fares on Amherst routes are prepaid by member academic institutions; students and staff show their ID to ride as often as they like.
