Founded in 1923, Texas Tech University (also referred to as Texas Tech, TTU, or just Tech) is a public research university. Tech is located in Lubbock, TX. Based on the 2013 Edition of Best Colleges Texas Tech University is ranked number 165. The following programs are highly ranked: the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business administration, the Edward E. Texas Tech competes in the NCAA’s Division I, Big 12 Conference for all of their varsity sports. Their athletic teams are known as the Red Raiders with the exception of the women’s basketball team, which is known as the Lady Raiders. The Lady Raiders is the only Tech team to win a national championship, which was in 1993. The football team has made 34 bowl appearances. The men’s basketball team has made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances. The marching band has also won a title, the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded to “recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence”.
With more than 500 student clubs and organizations at Texas Tech, students can find a group that goes with their interest! With about 50 fraternities and sororities, Greek life is a big part of college life at Texas Tech. While attending Texas Tech University you can head out to cheer on your Red Raiders at a football, or men’s or women’s basketball game. If you want to head off campus, Lubbock has many things to do. You can check out Buddy Holly’s statue on the Walk of Fame. Holly, a rock and roll icon, was from Lubbock, TX. You can also head over to the National Ranching Heritage Center, a museum of ranching history. For Lubbock night life, TT students should check out the Depot District, an area of the city dedicated to music. The Depot District is also home of many restaurants, shops and nightclubs.
Texas Tech University students must live on campus until they have completed 30 hours of coursework. That makes up about 20% of the schools students.
