The University of South Carolina, also referred to as USC, SC, or Carolina is located in Columbia, South Carolina. Carolina was founded in 1801 as a public institution. Based on the 2013 Edition of Best Colleges, The University of South Carolina ranks number 115. SC offers many undergrad and graduate programs, the following are highly ranked: Darla Moore School of Business (Best Business Schools number 73), Law School (Best Law Schools number 98), Medical School (Best Research number 85 and Best Primary care number 62), Engineering School (Best Engineering Schools number 97), and College of Education (Best Education Schools number 97).
The University of Carolina competes in the NCAA’s Division I, Southeastern Conference (SEC). They have a total of 19 varsity sports (8 men and 11 women). Carolina’s sports teams are known as the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks sports teams are very competitive and have won 8 national team championships in baseball, equestrian, and track and field. The University of South Carolina is the only NCAA Division I school with the gamecock as their mascot. USC’s colors are garnet and black. Carolina’s biggest rival is Clemson University. The annual Carolina – Clemson football game is the longest uninterrupted series in the South and the 3rd longest uninterrupted series overall, which was first played in 1896. Carolina’s main rival in the SEC is the University of Georgia.
With more than 300 student organizations, you are sure to find things to do while attending Carolina. These groups serve a variety of interest, and they are a great place to meet other students. The Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center is a great place to head to if you want to workout or participate in club sports. If you need a bite to eat or some entertainment Russell House is the place to be! Walking on Campus around the Horseshoe can be fun as well, in June 5, 1970 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. If you want to head off campus, Columbia has so much to offer! You can head out to one of Columbia’s many beautiful parks, the zoo, or even shopping!
