As one of the oldest universities on the West Coast, The University of Washington was founded in 1861 as a public research university. The University of Washington, commonly called UW or Washington is located in beautiful Seattle, Washington. Based on 2013 Edition of Best Colleges, Washington is ranked number 46. Being a top research university it is no surprise that the following programs are highly ranked: School of Medicine (Best Research number 12 and Best Primary Care number 2), College of Engineering (Best Engineering Schools Number 25), and Micheal G. Foster School of Business (Best Business Schools number 23).
When it comes to their athletic teams, The Washington Huskies compete in the NCAA’s Division I, Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12). Washington’s costumed mascot is Harry the Husky Dawg, as well as their live mascot, an Alaskan Malamute named Dubs. The Huskies football team, in particular, is a traditional league stand out. They also have a reputable basketball program. Besides football and basketball, UW has a total of 19 sports teams (9 men and 10 women). If you enjoy doing “The wave” at sporting events, it is because Husky graduate Robb Weller and UW band director Bill Bissel invented it in October 1981 while the football team was playing Stanford!
