Rutgers University is the state college of New Jersey with its main campus located in New Brunswick. Originating as a private college, Rutgers was chartered in 1766 and is the eighth oldest college in the United States, founded before the American Revolution. Rutgers is one of the two colonial colleges that have become a public university, the other being the College of William and Mary. Notably, the school is a member of the Association of American Universities which consists of the top 62 elite research universities in North America.
Rutgers was established about two decades after Princeton University (then the college of New Jersey) as a college to teach students who wanted to become ministers. With its colonial ties, it is fitting that the college was first called the trustees of Queens College in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who was part of King George III’s Queen consort and was supported by William Franklin who was the last Royal Governor of New Jersey and the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin.
Rutgers is one of the first American universities to participate in intercollegiate athletics. If you are a college football fan, you may be interested to learn that the first ever intercollegiate football game was played between Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1869 with Rutgers winning the game 6-4. Rutgers rich athletic history is not without controversy. In November 2012, Rutgers announced that they would be leaving the Big East Conference to join the Big Ten Conference. Rutgers made headlines again in April 2013 after firing Head Basketball Coach Mike Davis for abusive behavior towards his players. Julie Hermann was hired from the University of Louisville as the new Athletic Director in May of this year. Hermann is the school’s first female athletic director, and she made her own SportsCenter headlines for the alleged verbal abuse of her volleyball players at the University of Tennessee in 1996.
Rutgers ranks in the Top 5 institutions for higher education in the nation.
