Fittingly known as the Cowboys, Oklahoma State University (OSU or O-K State) was founded in 1890 as a public research university. Enrollment tops 23,000 but surpasses 35,000 system wide and offers 200 undergraduate degrees through 6 colleges. Princeton Review ranks OSU as one of the 50 “Best Value Colleges” and is also one of the highest rated veterinarian schools in the United States. OSU is one of five institutions where sun grant research initiative programs have been established by Congress for researching and developing environmentally-friendly bio-based energy alternatives.
OSU’s “Campus Master Plan” was announced in 2005 to improve athletic and administrative facilities over a 20 year period. As part of the plan, an athletic village is slated to be built just north of Boone Pickens Stadium, where all athletic facilities will be located. Much of the university’s contributions have come from business tycoon T. Boone Pickens. His total contributions over the years surpass $400 million. Over $265 million of his contributions have been towards athletics, which makes him the largest donor to a university’s athletic program in collegiate history.
Part of the Big 12 Conference, O-K State has won an impressive 52 NCAA Championships, with 34 of them coming from the wrestling team alone. The 34 wrestling team titles is the most ever won by a single team in a single sport. OSU’s basketball team was the first team to win back to back Division I National Championships in 1945 and 1946. You will want to make sure you go to Eskimo Joe’s to celebrate all your Cowboy victories (or drown your sorrows) as they were voted “Best College Post-Game Hangout” by Sporting News.
Oklahoma State is the largest employer in Stillwater, employing 5500 employees according to the 2007 Chamber of Commerce. Many of these jobs are centered around research and technology. Stillwater was named in 2010 as the “6th Fastest Growing Small Town in America” by Forbes.com.
While attending OSU you may need to find cheap storage for your belongings for one reason or another. You can rent a 5’x5′ storage unit close to OSU with drive up access for $33 a month. This may sound small but a 5’x5′ unit is very efficient and can hold the basic items of a dorm room. Be on the look out, because “coming soon” there will be more storage facilities available near 74078.
