The University of Kentucky (UK) is located in Lexington, Kentucky and was established in 1865. There are 28,000 students enrolled at UK making it the second largest university in the state. Students can choose from 16 colleges, 99 undergraduate programs along with masters, graduate, doctoral and professional programs. The university formed an agreement with the Kentucky General Assembly in 1997 mandating that Kentucky become a “Top 20” research university by 2020. Kentucky’s mascot is the Wildcats, which became their nickname after their 6-2 football victory over Illinois on October 9. 1909. The players were told after the game that they had “fought like wildcats” and the nickname stuck becoming official in 1976. UK has a legendary basketball program holding 8 national championships with the most recent coming in 2012 under Coach John Calipari. They were also the first basketball team to reach 2000 all time wins on 12/21/2009. The city of Lexington itself is a very well educated city ranking 10th nationwide among most educated cities with a population over 250,000 by the United States Census Bureau. Lexington has one of the most stable economies in the country due to its reliance on technology and government jobs. The university employs the greatest number of people in the city, but Lexington is also home to three Fortune 500 companies; Affiliated Computer Services, Lexmark International and Hewlett Packard.
