Located in Norman, the University of Oklahoma was founded in 1890, 17 years before Oklahoma even became a state. There are 29,000 students enrolled at OU with 35% of them enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences. There are 152 majors for students to choose from, many of which are highly competitive. OU is first per capita in National Merit Scholars among public universities, with over 700 scholars enrolled. OU was also ranked 50 among public universities in 2011 by US News and World Report, and with stricter admission guidelines the average ACT score needed to get in has risen from 24.5 in 1999 to 25.8 in 2006.
Oklahoma has a nationally known athletic program with 7 football national championships along with 18 NCAA national championships. Best known for football, OU’s football program has produced 5 Heisman Trophy winners including Sam Bradford who currently starts at quarterback for the St. Louis Rams. Until 2006, OU was the only school to have appeared in both a football and basketball championship in the same year. The University of Florida and Ohio State have since joined this exclusive club. OU has a long rivalry with the University of Texas called the River Red Shootout. In addition, they also have an in-state rivalry with neighbor Oklahoma State called the Bedlam Wars. It is a toss up which is the stronger rivalry but both rivalries, without a doubt, creates for some electric athletic atmospheres. On home game weekends, Norman is ranked in ESPN’s top 10 college money generators with fans coming from all over the country to cheer on their Sooners.
Freshmen are required to live on campus in one of four residence halls. With cost of living being so low, many students choose to live off campus after their Freshman year. Consequently, Oklahoma has seen a boom in apartment building since 2002. Making the decision to move off campus may create a need to investigate where you can find the best storage deals near campus to store your belongings in between moves. There are two storage unit facilities near 73019 that are within 5 miles of the university, including some great storage near OU. There are additional storage options available but they are a bit further. The cost for a 5’x10′ unit closest to OU will cost $60-$75 per month but each one has different amenities to choose from such as convenient drive-up access, extra high ceilings, alarm and climate controlled units.
