Colorado State University (CSU) is a public research university, is the state’s land grant institution, and is the flagship university for the Colorado State University system. In 1870, six years before Colorado gained statehood, CSU was founded as the Colorado Agriculture College. CSU has the distinction of being the largest college in the state of Colorado.
Located aat the base of the Rocky Mountains, Ft. Collins is located about 60 miles from Denver. Ft. Collins’ economy has a mix of manufacturing and service related businesses. Many high-tech companies have relocated to Ft. Collins because of the resources of CSU and its research facilities. Major employers in the Ft. Collins area are Advanced Energy, Agilent Technologies, AMD, Anheuser-Busch and Avago Technologies.
The Colorado State Rams, as they are known, compete in 16 sponsored intercollegiate sports, including 10 for women and 6 for men and compete in the Mountain West Conference, which is an NCAA Division 1 conference. The Mountain West Conference was formed in 1999, when the Rams split from the Western Athletic conference who had 16 members. In addition to sports, students have a wide range of activities to satisfy their interests. The Rocky Mountain Collegian is CSU’s student-run daily newspaper where students have complete control over editorial decisions. Every year, CSU holds a horse competition in which only girls can compete in to see who has the fastest horse.
Fort Collins is a college town where students can enjoy winter activities such as skiing and other winter sports, or hang out and enjoy the friendliness and support that students receive from everyone associated with this university. Some notable alumni who attended CSU were Al “Bubba” Baker, professional football player, Keith Carradine, Academy Award winning actor, Mary L. Cleave, Astronaut and Kim Lyons an athlete and personal trainer on the TV show, The Biggest Loser.
