While not all IU students start life as Hoosiers, they all leave Bloomington one! With more than 42,000 students, a storied basketball program, and wide spread recognition as a top academic university, IU Bloomington is the academic heart of the state of Indiana. In a state known for basketball, among other things, the Hoosiers of the Big Ten stand above the rest. Holders of five national championships, won over five decades, few schools have shown the sustained levels of excellence that IU fans have come to expect. Under coaches Branch McCracken and the often controversial Bob Knight, the school’s athletes stayed true to the amateur ideal of the student athlete, with high academic achievement and graduation rates among the school’s athletes.
Indiana also has a vast Greek system, with more than 17% of the student body joining either a fraternity or sorority. The Indiana Memorial Union is the second largest student union in the country and features hotel, meeting space, bowling alley and theater. One sign of the school’s academic success is its regular showing in the top 50 universities in the nation, and in 2001 it was named Time Magazine’s College of the Year.
Bloomington itself has been referred to as one of the most beautiful college towns in America, and was so named due to the flora in the area blooming so beautifully. It has nearly 85,000 residents, and live in a city with an average cost of living, relative to the nation as a whole. Apartments can be found easily in the $700-800 range, and a careful shopper can find what they want for just $500 per month.
