Auburn University is one of the two great, historic public universities in the state of Alabama, along with the University of Alabama. Founded in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, Auburn soon became the first four-year coed college in the state. Oddly, the school was known popularly as Auburn long before it officially became known by that name. Between 1899 and 1960, in fact, the school was known as the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Auburn’s academic excellence is obvious when one learns that it is one of the few colleges in the nation that is a land-grant university, a sea-grant university, and a space-grand university. This triple status shows that the research and study completed at AU is recognized by the government as being critical to many facets of our national health and growth.
Outside of the south, however, most people know Auburn for its athletic program, primarily football. The Tigers long-standing cross-state rivalry with the Crimson Tide has been well documented. Auburn competes in the highly-competitive SEC, and has won nearly 20 national titles in several sports, including football, men’s and women’s swimming, and track and field. In the 1980s, the nation found out that Auburn grad Bo Jackson knew both football and baseball, and techies will discover that Apple CEO Tim Cook is one of Auburn’s many distinguished alumni.
The city of Auburn, Alabama is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. The population of the city itself is more than 50,000, and when Columus, Georgia and Tuskegee, Alabama are taken into the account, the region is home to nearly half a million people. The city has a slightly greater cost of living than the national average, but there are still apartments to lease at great prices, with some starting at less than $350 per month.
