If visiting the best college basketball arenas is on your bucket list then you need to make sure that you visit Cameron Indoor Stadium, home of the Duke Blue Devils. The idea was conceived in 1935 on the cover of a matchbook of all places and held its first game on January 6, 1940 where Duke defeated the Princeton Tigers 36-27. While Duke is known for it’s legendary Men’s Basketball program with 4 NCAA National Championships and their iconic Coach Mike Krzyzewski, they also hold 9 other National Championships in Women’s Golf, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Soccer and Men’s Lacrosse.
Duke was founded in Trinity, North Carolina but moved to its current location of Durham, North Carolina in 1892 and has become a nationally ranked private research institution. Duke has a highly competitive academic environment with 90% of it’s undergraduates ranking in the top 10% of their high school classes. There are two undergraduate schools: Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and Pratt School of Engineering. While attending Duke is a costly financial commitment, 50% of their students receive some sort of financial aid, so help is out there!
Being a research institution, Duke is by far the largest employer in Durham, employing more than 27,000 people between the University and University Health System. Other well known employers in the area are IBM and GlaxoSmithKline. You will be able to enjoy many outdoor activities while living in Durham’s mild climate with average lows in the upper 40’s and average highs in the 70’s…picture perfect!
Affordable housing options are available off campus for about $800/month for a 2-bedroom apartment. While living in Durham you may need to seek out storage deals close to Duke. There are many options to choose from including drive-up access, roll-up doors, and alarm systems for a monthly rate as low as $40/month! Climate controlled units are available too, but are probably not worth the extra money since the weather is so mild. There are only a few storage facilities in 27708 to choose from so you may need to explore places that are 5-10 miles outside of campus.
