Georgetown University is located in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., overlooking the Potomac River. It is surrounded by high-end shopping, restaurants and bars. It was founded in 1789, by John Carroll, as a private institution. Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. Based on the 2013 Edition of Best Colleges, Georgetown University ranks 21 for national Universities. Georgetown is made up four undergraduate schools and four graduate and professional schools. Some of the programs that Georgetown is known for is Business and Economics, Government, Law, International Affair, and Medicine and Health Sciences. Georgetown University’s current enrollment stands at almost 7,000 undergraduate and over 8,000 post-graduate.
As part of the NCAA’s Division I, the Georgetown Hoyas are known well for their supreme men’s basketball team. Their biggest rival in the Big east Conference is Syracuse. Besides basketball, other sports at Georgetown are baseball, softball, golf, lacrosse, sailing, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, men’s crew, and football, women’s field hockey, rowing, and volleyball. A constant figure you see at Georgetown games is their mascot, Jack the Bulldog. The men’s basketball team has won seven Big East championships, appeared in five Final Fours, and won a national championship in 1984.
Georgetown has a many famous alumni. The following are a few famous heads of state and/or government: Bill Clinton- 42nd President of the United States of America, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo- President of Philippines 2001-2010, Galo Plaza- President of Ecuador 1948-1952 and 4th Secretary General of the Organization of American States 1968-1975. Some other famous names that attended Georgetown that you might have heard of: Savannah Guthrie (L2002)- co-host NBC’s Today Show, Mitchell Hurwitz (c1985)- TV writer, creator of Arrested Development, Maria Shriver (c1977)- NBC-TV news commentator and former first lady of California, Patrick Ewing (c1985)- Former NBA basketball player, Jim Schwartz (c1989)- head coach for the Detroit Lions, and Bradley Cooper (c1997) actor.
