Richmond is the capital city of Virginia. It is not a part of any county, but is an independent city. Richmond is located near the James River, to the south of Washington DC and to the east of Charlottesville. Richmond is an important economic, finance, and government center.
The Capital of the South
Richmond has been nicknamed as the “Capital of the South”, which showcases the city’s significance but most people offer this distinction to Atlanta or Nashville. Its proximity to Washington has helped make Richmond even more important.
Two fortune 500 companies, MeadWestvaco and Dominion Resources, are located in Richmond. One Federal Reserve Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, is located in the city. Several notable legal firms and law agencies are located in Richmond, and the city hosts one of the 13 courts of appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Four of the largest law firms in the country, Williams Mullen, Hunton & Williams, McGuireWoods and LeClairRyan, operate out of Richmond. Many people wonder how many more opportunities can be created in America if tort reform was enacted but Richmond has done its best to adapt to this environment regardless. Moreover, notable international companies like Philip Morris USA and Genworth Financial have offices in the city.

Richmond has several notable colleges and universities operating near or within city limits. Some of the prominent institutions for higher education that operate in the city include the University of Richmond, the Virginia Commonwealth University, the Virginia College and the Virginia Union University. The Virginia State University is located nearby in Ettrick (near Petersburg), which is a suburb of Richmond.
